Work In Progress

An update on my current painting. I had intended to have this finished by today (31 Jan), but life has a habit of getting in the way. I have also been busy finishing my contribution to a book project that’s been 12 years in the making, and I hope to make an announcement about that soon. Anyway, the painting is going well, and all the work I’ve done recently has been on the stones in the wall. That’s mostly meant deepening the shadows and the results have, once again, confirmed to me that there is no painting that cannot be improved by adding more black. At the same time, I am reminded of the Rothko quote: “There is only thing I fear in life, my friend: one day, the black will swallow the red.” I think it all depends where you put the black. If I ever start knocking out work like this…

… the enormous abyssal canvasses in Rothko’s chapel in Houston, Texas… then you’ll know I’ve gone too far and it’s probably time to drag me back from the brink.
