George Shaw: Mum’s

This is a new painting from George Shaw’s imminent (less than a month away) retrospective – A Corner Of A Foreign Field – at the Yale Centre for British Art. Entitled ‘Mum’s’, it refers back to one of the very first paintimgs George completed while at the Royal College in the late 1990’s:

This painting was criticsed at the time by a tutor who likened it to be part of the ‘School of Bad Art’, to which George’s quite reasonable response was “you cheeky fucker.” It depicts the home he grew up in Tile Hill, near Coventry, painted with “aching verrisimiltude” and made as a direct and utterly sincere response to all the ‘YBA’ shit that was all over the place at that time. It’s a curious sensation to know that I’ve stood in front of this house, on my one and only visit to Tile Hill in 2015. It was like wandering around inside someone’s imagination, as I recognised many of the places George has painted over the past two decades. The new painting details a few cosmetic changes, such as the ubiquitous wheelie bin, but evidences for me that the more things change, the more things stay the same.
