Secretly Sharing the Landscape with the Living

An interesting short film by Martin A.Shaw, inspired by Edward Thomas’ poetic ruminations on the Icknield Way, the ancient track that runs all the way from Norfolk to Wiltshire. You get six minutes of atmospheric, mist-shrouded fields and woods, with a minimalist ambient soundtrack that makes Eno’s Discreet Music sound like Coltrane’s Interstellar Space. The kind of thing that, pre-You Tube, used to wash up in the wee hours on Channel 4 or, more likely, on VHS compilations of assorted weirdities that we used to share around. The imagery brought to my mind some of the scenes from Jacques Tourneur’s Night Of The Demon, which is still one of my favourite films.
