The Hell Hole
A blazing hot summer’s day is perhaps not the best time to appreciate the full potential of what this location has to offer. Hidden away in the woods between Morley and Gildersome, the ‘Hell Hole’ is the bricked-up entrance to a railway tunnel that runs a good half mile or so under the divide between the town and the adjacent village. The intrepid explorer can get in, but it’s a genuinely creepy experience as once inside you descend into a true underworld of total darkness, filled with the sound of dripping water and the occasional distant echo that, source unknown, raises the hairs on the back of your neck. It’s been there for decades, bricked up since the late 1960’s, and would make the ideal location for a low-budget horror film.
