Lady Macbeth

I like the look of this film, for which I will inevitably have to wait until it’s released on DVD to see it. Lady Macbeth interprets the 1865 novella by Nikolai Leskov, with Alice Birch’s screenplay shifting the location to the north of England in the same era as the source material. The trailer suggests an emphasis on atmosphere, making the most of the windswept moorlands and gloomy interiors, and clearly the focus is on the central performance by Florence Pugh, who was outstanding in The Falling (which I recommend) and here seems to be channelling the essence of Emily Bronte’s Catherine and/or Daphne DuMaurier’s Rebecca, so the “Alfred Hitchcock directing Wuthering Heights” comment by one critic seems more than appropriate.
