Father John Misty poster

Father John Misty poster - Rik Rawling

This is an old drawing I did of Anton Szandor LaVey, founder of the Church of Satan, mocked-up as a cover for a Father John Misty concert. I’ve always liked Josh Tillman’s solo records, and when he made the stylistic shift under the moniker ‘Father John Misty’ I was unsure at first, but after three albums (the new one Pure Comedy is out in April) he’s finally won me over to his new aesthetic. He describes the use of the FJM alter-ego as a “failed thought experiment” but it definitely worked as a way of jolting him into a different creative mindspace. There’s more humour in his music now, and a broader range of influences to draw from. A friend described him as “The Eagles playing at Anton LaVey’s Black House”, which is a mad enough idea to use just to get people’s attention. Here’s some of my favourite Father John Misty songs:

Father John Misty – Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings

Father John Misty – Holy Shit

Father John Misty – Pure Comedy
