The Kite’s Tale
I got this 1990 RSPB book purely for the cover art and internal illustrations by Peter Snow. It was written at a time when the future of the species looked uncertain, having been treated like winged vermin for many years and poisoned to the brink of extinction. In the past couple of decades the bird has made something of a resurgence, expanding its numbers and its range beyond its traditional Welsh homeland. Peter Snow’s illustrations of the Red Kite and its habitat are suffused with a sense of awe and melancholy, subtly capturing the atmosphere of the places these birds prefer to inhabit and suggesting a deep connection to a more ancient Britain, over which they soared as lords of the air.
