The Lower Woods
Last week I was in Lower Woods, about a half hour from our house. November, known to the Dutch as ‘slachtmaand’ (slaughter month), was holding back the worst it could typically offer, gifting us instead with cloudless blue skies and the kind of glowing light painters dream of. Deep in the woods there’s a stream that at this time of years becomes a leaf-choked swamp, and I found plenty of viable subject matter for future paintings. This is a sketch of one of those scenes, that may or may not one day be realised on canvas.
