William Tyler: Behold The Spirit

I don’t often listen to music when I’m drawing or painting, preferring instead to listen to interviews or podcasts or audiobooks. When the mood does take me though, I seem to prefer instrumental music, which allows thoughts to drift and nothing specific intrudes upon the eye/mind/hand co-ordination. Lately I’ve been listening a lot to William Tyler. A former member of the bands Silver Jews and Lambchop, Tyler plays in the slipstream of modern American folk, and each song seems to evoke a familiar melancholia while, at the same time, offering an unusual sense of hope and redemption, which is something his home country could do with right now.
