Before The Flood
There is nothing wrong with the planet. Nothing wrong with the planet. The planet is fine. The people are fucked… We’re going away. Pack your shit, folks. We’re going away. And we won’t leave much of a trace, either. Thank God for that. Maybe a little styrofoam. Maybe. A little styrofoam. The planet’ll be here and we’ll be long gone. Just another failed mutation. Just another closed-end biological mistake. An evolutionary cul-de-sac.
My friend Derek Gray tipped me off to the fact that one of our favourite bands – Mogwai – had contributed songs to the soundtrack for a new film. Before The Flood is a National Geographic documentary narrated by and featuring Leonardo Di Caprio. It focusses on the impacts of what’s known as ‘Climate Change’ and by the end of it you may feel as I do that ‘Armageddon’ is a more appropriate name for the phenomenon. The soundtrack is great music, but it serves to deliver a bitter truth: we are doomed. It might take much longer than the end of the world scenarios depicted in dozens of shit Hollywood films, but it’s coming. It’s coming, and every living species on the planet is going to cop for it. I wish I could say that there’s still a shard of hope at the bottom of Pandora’s box but, based on this overwhelming evidence to the contrary, I suspect not.
