Half Time

Half Time

Another painting from the Project Mogwai series, completed in early 2009 when I was starting to achieve some level of competence with the paints. At that time I’d just discovered the books of John Burnside, who soon became one of my favourite writers, and I find this excerpt from his first memoir A Lie About My Father to be especially appropriate:

The shadows, the trees, the wide lawns – it was all as it should be, but it was too still, too heavy, waiting for the day when the dead would return, coming through rain, coming through the wind, seeking out the angles and corners they knew, the faces they could name, the bodies that were flesh of their flesh.
